Is anyone doing anything special for your husbands/father's for Father's Day? My hubby has made it clear that he does not want anything this year (which in Smith family code means, don't spend $ ). We're trying to sell our house, so things are a little crazy, and we're also saving so that we can purchase our new home. But I was just wondering what everyone else is doing. We may cook out or something, but it depends on how messy we wanna get the house (you know how it is when you're trying to sell, it has to stay presentable at all times). I may just have AJ make him a card and something else crafty, and probably make a special breakfast/meal and such. What about ya'll?

Since our home is the holiday house I will be cooking dinner. Everyone looks forward to dinner at my house because I'm one of those who always goes over the top with the fancy table settings, crystal and china and all that stuff. . I like to use real table linens, So right about now they are all trying to guess what color napkins I'm going to use. (Royal Blue) And I'm also one of those people who enjoy doing crafts, so I can usually make a gift for next to nothing. Along with my husband I will have two son in laws and a nephew in law who will be there. I will have a small gift for each of them and it will not be over $10 for all of them. Here's how I'll do it. I don't know if you have them where you live but here in Los Angeles we have .99 cent stores. I will get a coffee mug for each of them. (black or blue 99 cent a piece) Next I will get a pack of disposable razors 99 cents and the little travel size shaving gel 4 for 99 cents plus one. than you go to your own kitchen cabinet and grab a pack of hot chocolate for each one. You buy a roll of cellophane wrap for 99 cents. You put this all together and tie it with ribbon that you might have left over from something else. You make a card to attach to the cups on the computer and there you have it. That's my plan for Father's Day! I have to admit I love entertaining family and friends and making little trinkets for them. I just love making people smile.

That's a great idea, we have 99 cent only stores and I'm sure I could put together something like that also. I'm also hosting all in the family here in Arizona. We are going to spend the day at the farm. It's hard to get my father in law to leave the comfort of his home so the challange is to get him to come over and then we will probably grill some chicken and turkey on the pit. The husbands and fathers will sit back and chill. Only thing missing now is My daughter and son in law in Va. Can't wait til they come so we can have more family outings.

I have to admit I love entertaining family and friends and making little trinkets for them. I just love making people smile. Now those are some good ideas! I wish we still had .99 cents stores, I haven't seen them since we left AZ . I used to live right around the corner from one, so we practically lived there. They really need to branch out to the east coast. These people over here don't even know what they're missing. We do have a few of those mom and pop type dollar stores, I will check some of those out. And we have 5 below , where everything is $5 and under. My husband really does appreciate the crafty and frugal things. He loves to see something nice made from something inexpensive. Although he doesn't shave, (that darn asian blood in him, I have to shave and he doesn't ) his face is still as soft as baby. Makes him seem way younger than he is. Anyway, his father called and said that he's going to cookout again this year (he has every year for a while), so we will probably stick w/the special breakfast/brunch type deal. You ladies are inspiring me to get crafty though and figure out something for me and my son to do for him as well as his father. (Although his father is rather high class, so I'm not sure what to do for him...) I'm like you ladies, I love to entertain, and especially cooking for others. And like Cheryl, I like to get fancy sometimes. Trouble is, my hubby's family is not like minded, they only get together when they have to - this being the one time per year (and they don't like my food so much - I cook from scratch, and many people aren't used to "from scratch" taste anymore). So, I really don't have anyone to entertain. Although Deanna just bought a new house, and I have to admit, I've been up in her kitchen cooking on more than one occasion. Hey, I take what I can get

The reason everyone likes coming to our house to eat is because I cook from scatch. It kind of reminds them of home. Reason being because almost everyone we know is from the south or their parents are.
Isn't it funny how people get so use to packaged foods that when they eat real home cooking it taste funny to them. A lot of prepackaged foods I don't and can't eat because I can taste all the preservatives in it.
It is nice to know there are still some young women who can throw down as we use to say. My girls know how to cook too, because I made sure they could.
As far as the gift goes, you can always substitute what's in the cup. You can try finding a small manicure kit or something like that, or you can just put the hot chocolate, a tea bag, and a coffee bag.
Anyway the request for dinner is Smothered Chicken. So with that I'm doing collard greens, black eyed peas, yams, rice, mac & cheese (another request) and a peach cobbler for dessert. I almost for got I do this cornbread biscuit that my husband just loves.

OK, I wiped the drool of the keyboard long enough to start typing. I'm saying, can I come to your house this Sunday? LOL That is weird that (some) people don't know what home cooking tastes like anymore. My husband and I often talk about the same thing. I could make something that he and my son go crazy over, and then he may take the leftovers to work, and offer to share w/someone, and they look at him like he's crazy! Or they taste it, and then don't want more. If it doesn't come from a box, or isn't handed to them from a window, they are not feeling it. I love it though, because it allows me to be in total control of what's going into everything. And I am right w/you on being able to taste the preservatives in many things, sometimes it's overwhelming. But I grew up on from scratch cooking, my grandparents being from the south, and I dream of the day when I can make my pound cake as "melt in your mouth - buttery" as the one my grandma used to make. Although my husband wasn't raised on it, over the years he has come to love and prefer things from scratch. I sure hope to see that cornbread biscuit pop up in the recipe section , I think my husband would like that. MMMMM..... and he loves smothered chicken.... This cookout thing is starting to sound real bland, same old hot dogs and burgers . Yeah, our brunch is gonna have to be on point....

We had a blast on Father's Day! I cooked and all our daugthers spent the day with us. The one son spent the day with his wife and inlaws, but he did come by to wish his dad a Happy Father's Day. One of the girls brought her new Beau over to meet the family and to get the once over by the rest of the sisters. And, they were pretty good about it this time. That means he passed with flying colors. All in all it was a great day.

That's great. Father's day was a success for us also. We actually succeeded in getting my husbands father to come out to our house which is a hour drive for them and he never goes anywhere. In fact it was almost cancelled because noone believed that he was coming so they didn't take me serious and made other plans. But mother in law did it she got him out and he knew I would be upset that he didn't come. Really I wouldn't but his doctor wants him to get up and about more because of his blood circulation in his legs. So any way it was a last minute surprise and he did show up. I had to come up with something quick to eat for 10 people and everything turned out great. He called when he got home and thanked me and said he was glad he came. Praise God.

Well, my in-laws decided to cancel their little gathering at the last minute. Sooooo, I also had to hustle to try to figure something out, when I hadn't originally planned on cooking. Usually for a special occasion, I'd spend quite a bit of time prepping, and I'm kinda compulsive about having things prepared, so I was kinda stressing (bad habit). My husband, his dad, and my son went golfing in the morning, so that gave me a little time to make sure the house was clean (since I thought we'd be leaving). When they got home, that afternoon, I found out that we'd be eating at home, so I had to go to the store and grab some stuff (good thing we're not out in the country yet, that would've really been a pain). We just ended up cooking out here (since Steve was still in the mood for cookout food). We grilled steaks, burgers, hot dogs, fresh corn on the cob, and baked potatoes. It turned out ok, but had I known in time I might have thrown down some of those cornbread biscuits, too. But all in all, he enjoyed his day - even though he actually spent quite a bit of time working on stuff around the house (pressure washing the roof, mulching the bushes...). I told you we're trying to sell the house, so it seems like every spare moment, we're doing something to it. I keep praying that someone will just come and say how much they love it, just the way it is, and we can stop all this madness. Can't wait to get back to the west coast. (Lord willing)

The cornbread biscuits were a hit for those who tasted them for the first time. And I'm glad everyone had a great day.
