Yeah, I went there , and no you didn't misread it...Submission.
It's always a touchy topic, and one that we women like to dance around and pretend is never mentioned in the Bible. But it is. And if we are to be continually striving in our daily walk, we must touch on it eventually.
Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands... (NIV)
Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands... (NKJV) 1Pet 3:1
Submission- to yield/surrender (oneself) to the will or authortiy of another; to allow oneself to be subjected to something
So the verse would look now look like this...
Wives, likewise, yield and surrender yourself to the will and authority of your husbands...
That doesn't sound like much fun, huh? Hmmm... Now's the time that we would typically start to explain this verse away, and say that: "It couldn't possibly apply to us"..."Especially in this day and age"..."Times are different"..."The Lord understands"..."I ain't about to be nobody's doormat"..."Well when he starts to act respectable, then I'll start respecting him"..."No, you don't understand how my husband is"...and so on.
But let's just pretend for a moment, if you will, that God really does mean what He says in His word Then how would we deal w/this whole submission bit?
Well, I'm a firm believer of explaining the Bible with...the Bible! If the Lord tells us what to do in one part of His Word, then he will explain to us how to do it in another.
For instance, I underlined certain words in the above scriptures: "in the same way", and "likewise". In both versions of this scripture we see the same type of phrasing. If someone says to us "likewise" or "in the same way", then they must have already told us the answers to the following: like what? and in the same way as what? Well first of all we see this verse trotting on the heels of us being told of Christ's suffering. We are told that He left us an example of submission to follow (1 Pet 2:21):
"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly..."
1 Pet 2:22-23
~We often pay this respect to strangers, but not our own husbands.
~How often do we sin w/our mouths against our hubbies? Or feel that they've insulted us, and thus retaliate and insult them? When instead, we should be simply turning the matter over to God in willing submission to Him and our husbands.
This is only one of the examples that we are given on submission, but such an important one, that I think I'll stop here for now, and just meditate on it...
