Rice Krispie Religion
devotion from www.tjc.org
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. (1 Peter 2:2-3 NIV)
The cereal Rice Krispies has been around since 1928, and has been a popular cereal for many generations and still going strong. It is amazing how a simple cereal can be so popular for so many generations. I have always enjoyed the Rice Krispie “snap, crackle and pop” when one adds milk to the cereal and it begins to explode with a myriad of sounds.
There is a lot of wonderful “snap, crackle and pop” when the pure milk of the gospel is poured onto a receptive rice kernel, much like how a person first comes to know our Lord Jesus Christ. The “snap, crackle and pop” passion of the new birth in Christ experienced by many believers can be compared to that of falling in love and getting married. That feeling of first love is often exciting, passionate and leaves an impression on our hearts. We are lifted up to new and incredible emotional highs and are filled with overflowing joy and love. However, in either relationship, as powerful as those feelings are, they will not always be enough to sustain a healthy growing relationship with God or with our spouse.
The key to establishing a growing relationship with God and our spouse is in our continual growth and progression into maturity. We should be watchful not to let either relationship stand still and become like soggy Rice Krispies, no longer snapping, crackling or popping. Often, we get mired down by putting our own desires and needs above that of God or our spouse and forget what it means to love. Or we forget about the importance of God and our spouse and are overcome by the assaults of our flesh, the world, or the devil. When we fail to continue to soak up the pure spiritual milk of the gospel or the love of our spouse we find that the original excitement and passion in the relationship will also disappear; all that is left is a bowl of bland and soggy Rice Krispies.
In our relationship with God, the “snap, crackle and pop” of passion can be sustained by being nourished by His Word and Spirit daily, and constantly remembering God’s compassion and mercy as we grow into the fullness of Christ day by day. God’s compassions never fail. They are new every day; great is God’s faithfulness.
Our relationship with our spouse needs to be united with the love of Christ. Many times our own love has limitations. Only the true example of a selfless love can remind us what it means to love and maintain the “snap, crackle and pop” during our life together.
Reflection
1. What are some ways to ensure that we can keep growing in spiritual maturity to sustain a healthy relationship with God?
2. What are some ways to keep the “snap, crackle and pop” in our relationship with our spouse?
